BS EN ISO 1461 Standard HomeThis is a featured page

BS EN ISO 1461:2009 is also known as BS 1461 for short which is a standard provided by the British Standard Institute (BSI) that provide specifications on the general properties of coatings and test methods for coatings applied by dipping fabricated iron and steel articles (including certain castings) in a zinc melt (containing not more than 2% of other metals). The treatment of iron and steel is a key standard and is an indispensable specification for buyers of hot dip galvanized coatings and galvanizers.

Coatings is a covering that is applied to the surface of an object, usually referred to as the substrate. Coatings are applied to improve surface properties of the substrate in many cases, such as adhesion, appearance, wet ability, wear resistance corrision resistance and scratch resistance. in other particular cases of printing processes and semiconductor device fabrication the coating forms a very important part of the finished good. Printin and coating processes involve the application of a thin film of functional material to a substrate such as fabric, paper, poile, film or sheet stock. The discussion of this article is frequently termed 'web based' or 'roll to roll' coating. When wound through the coating machine a roll of substrate is typically called a web. BS 1461 only applies to coatings applied in liquids.

Bs 1461 has been revised and upgraded into the new third edition that incorporates changes in content to reflect the experience gained in using the older version of BS EN ISO 1461. The scope of this standard application has been refined to exclude welded of woven mesh products that are contionuously galvanized where the there has been a big change to the text include:

1) Explaning weld seepage

2) Explaining Yinc melt

3) References to the availability of secondary zinc supply

4) Explanatory notes on coating finish

But it does not apply to the following:

1) Wire, Sheet and woven or welded mesh goods that are hot dip galvanized continuously

2) Tube and pipe that are hot dip galvanized in automatic plants.

3) Post treatment and over

A model to assure that its standard organisations help to overcome coatings problem by applying coatings according to the specifications provided to ensure a long term protection an all types of resistance against exposure of all weather and human activity is promoted by BS 1461. It also applies to door ifrastructure such as kids playgrounds with rides, street barriers and bridges that need a special coating for long term protection.
